Lava Lotuses are enemies in Super Mario Bros. 3. They are artificial flowers[1] that live underwater. A Lava Lotus resembles a large translucent version of Panser from Super Mario Bros. 2, but according to Nintendo Power, Lava Lotuses have a relation to Piranha Plants,[2] despite there being no such indication in the original instruction booklet. Their English name comes from their resemblance to the aquatic lotus flower. Lava Lotuses are capable of creating and storing lava balls under their transparent petals and attack by opening up to release them. The lava balls travel rather slowly and in a straight line from their point of release, and can go through platforms. They can be defeated only by Statue Mario, Hammer Mario, or Invincible Mario.
Lava Lotuses are programmed to spawn and spit out five lava balls at a time, spawning one every 32 frames (equivalent to two pulses of the flower). However, to avoid object overload, only up to eight lava balls can be present at a time. Due to this and how slow the lava balls move and how long they take to despawn, a Lava Lotus will only shoot out five the first time each time it is brought on screen. After this, it will be unable to spawn the last two (despite still animating as though it does) and only shoot out three. After this, depending on how long it takes for the first ones to disappear, it may start endlessly spawning four or continue alternating between five and three. If the Lava Lotus is brought far enough off-screen to unload it and then brought back on, the sequence will start from the beginning.
Lava Lotuses have appeared in Western-exclusive media of the Super Mario franchise a few times. One appears briefly in the episode "Oh, Brother!" of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, where it unleashes lava balls on Frog Luigi, who manages to swim past them with ease. In the book Dinosaur Dilemma, Mario avoids some Lava Lotuses while collecting coins in Lake Trilobite.
